Transforming Healthcare with Artificial Intelligence

Join us to build innovative GenAI solutions to solve some of the biggest challenges facing healthcare providers today.

The Tennessee Chapter of HIMSS is hosting a Generative AI Hackathon in the fall of 2023, focused on solving challenges for healthcare provider organizations. This four-week hackathon will bring together the brightest minds in healthcare and technology to solve real-world problems using Generative AI.

  • 6-Week Duration from October 3 to November 15.
  • 4-Weeks of Solution Development, culminating by November 3, 2023
  • Kick-Off Event on October 3, 2023. Dive deep into AI insights with our industry-leading AI panel.
  • Judging & Awards spread across preliminary rounds with esteemed investors and a grand finale Closing Event on November 15, 2023, with a judging panel of CIOs & CTOs of major healthcare institutions.
  • Team formation and submissions open on August 24, 2023 and close on September 29, 2023.

Is Your Team Up To The Challenge?

The current healthcare and provider landscape has been disrupted by shifts in patient care dynamics, workforce shortages, and administrative challenges. Now, more than ever, technology and innovation are keys to overcoming these barriers.

Enter Generative AI — a burgeoning sector with limitless potential to reshape provider organizations. At the heart of our mission is the belief in technology’s power to create a healthier world.

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is a time-limited event where teams of developers, designers, and other creative professionals work together to create a software or hardware project. The goal is to rapidly develop a functional prototype or solution to a specific challenge. At the end of the event, projects are presented to a panel of judges for evaluation.

For the TN HIMSS Generative AI Hackathon, this means we will have about a month-log period for teams to develop their solutions and submit their project before selecting finalists to present at the hackathon finals!

When is the hackathon?

The hackathon kick-off event will be October 3rd, 2023, with project submissions due on November 3rd. There will be a preliminary round of judging the week of November 6th from the investor community to choose the top 2 finalists from each of the three divisions. The Closing event will take place on the afternoon of November 15th where the division finalists present their solutions to a C-suite panel of five judges from the provider organization community.

What is the deadline date to submit a use case and team?

September 29th, 2023

What is the goal of this hackathon?

For this hackathon, the focus is on solving problems in the healthcare industry, focused on provider-specific organizations, by leveraging generative AI. We’ve created the following subject areas for teams to focus on when developing their solution.

  • Enhancing efficiency and productivity
    • Improve efficiency and productivity for providers in the area of scheduling, registration, coding, documentation, billing, or patient instructions
  • Enhancing medical research
    • Enhance medical research by enabling synthesized information from diverse type of unstructured or structured data sources
  • Strengthening patient experiences
    • Improve patient (i.e. customer) experience during and after care by enabling Gen AI to support all or part of the patient journey
  • Increasing the quality of care
    • Improve quality of care for providers by enabling the right clinical information and intelligence at the right time for all care givers

Your project should have a problem statement that aligns with one of these areas, and then seek to solve it.

What if I don’t know anything about Generative AI?

That’s okay! The point of a hackathon is to learn about and how to use a new technology and how it can be used to solve a problem. Here are some resources about Generative AI and how it’s being used:

Microsoft Azure Training – Introduction to Generative AI

How do I participate in the hackathon?

We recommend having a team of 4 – 6 people to work together on the hackathon and build out your project. Once you have a team and an idea for what your project will be, you can sign up at the link here.

What do I have to submit?

As part of signing up for the hackathon, your team is will create and submit the following materials:

  • The Deck: PowerPoint presentation highlighting your team, your product and the technology used. (Don’t worry, we will provide you with a template)
  • A Video: A 5-minute (or less) video, detailing the features of your submission (Use this to build on your PowerPoint, not just to reiterate it. The two items work together.)
  • A Brief Description: 300 characters to describe your project.
  • The Team Sheet: a spreadsheet of all the awesome people who worked on your solution.

How will the projects be judged?

Here is the judging criteria that we’ve come up with:

Impact

  • How well does the project address the specific challenges faced in the healthcare industry?
  • How accurate are the generated outputs? Do they align with the expected standards in the healthcare domain?
  • Are the generated outputs consistent and reliable across different scenarios?
  • What is the impact of the solution in resolving its problem statement, and how is it measurable?
  • Can users understand how the generative AI model arrived at its outputs? Is the process transparent and explainable?
  • Does the project have the potential to improve patient care, outcomes, or the overall healthcare experience?

Innovation

  • Is the approach unique and inventive? Does it stand out from existing solutions in the market?
  • Does the project showcase creative thinking in how generative AI is applied to the targeted area?
  • Is the solution user-friendly, easy to understand, and efficient to use?
  • How well does the solution integrate into existing workflows and systems?
  • How effectively did the team communicate the problem, solution, and its benefits during the presentation?
  • Was the functionality of the solution adequately demonstrated to showcase its capabilities?
  • Did the team collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines (AI, healthcare, user experience, etc.)?

Difficulty

  • How well-suited are the chosen algorithms and generative models for the problem at hand?
  • Does the project involve complex technical implementation, indicating a high level of skill and expertise?
  • Can the solution be scaled up to handle larger volumes of data and usage without significant degradation in performance?
  • Is the solution designed in a way that it can be maintained, updated, and adapted over time as needs evolve?
  • Are there measures in place to ensure patient data privacy and ethical considerations in the generative AI solution?

When can the ‘hacking’ or solution development start and end?

The official solution development start date for all teams commences on October 3rd and concludes on November 3rd. Teams are encouraged to have a solid use case selected and plan formulated in an effort to start development work on October 3rd.

What if I have a pre-built solution that I’d like to bring to the hackathon and showcase as part of my team’s use case selection?

No, unfortunately, we are recommending you start the build of a new use case solution on October 3rd, to keep the playing field leveled and fair.

Technology Approach

  • Programming languages:
    • Python is recommended though any programming language can be used
  • Generative AI Frameworks:
    • LangChain is recommended though any framework, GenAI or otherwise, can be used
  • Integrated Development Environment (IDE):
    • Visual Studio Code is recommended though any IDE can be used
  • Large Language Model (LLM):
    • Important: A GenAI LLM must be used in the project you submit to the TN HIMSS GenAI Hackathon
    • Upon request, TN HIMSS can provide credits to access Azure’s OpenAI API
    • You can use your own pre-trained LLM on any platform, or even a custom-trained LLM on any platform. However, note that TN HIMSS’ support and office hours will be focused on the Microsoft Azure GenAI tech stack, including the OpenAI API.
    • LLM Transparency: If you choose not to use Azure’s OpenAI API, you should provide an explanation of the limitations that led you to a different solution. This should be done in your final presentation deck.
    • Note: Slalom and Microsoft will be available for technical support during open office hours to help address potential technical difficulties with OpenAI functionality
  • Hosting:
    • You can host your application anywhere
    • Your application demo must be accessible to the judges
      • You must make your application accessible through a public URL
      • You can choose to implement authentication and share credentials in your submission deck
    • Data:
      • You must source your own data sets
        • Here is an option to leverage if need be – Synthea
      • Patient data must be anonymized in alignment with HIPAA regulations
